This exhibition was part of the Cape Town Month of Photography in 2003. It featured portraits of Indonesians who told me about their dreams. Also included were scenes from the country, capturing the journey through my ancestral land. Stops included the capital city Jakarta, historical Makassar, majestic former capital Jogyakarta and the beautiful Bali island. This is an extract from the Indonesian Dreams exhibition statement:
I set out doing portraits of ordinary folk. I wanted to know their vision... mostly for themselves... Juan said politics bores him. One night he, Ishia and Aswin were having take-aways at Wendy’s. It was great meeting them. Juan doesn’t really know what his vision should be for his future, but is working at an advertising company at the moment. Ishia has interior designer dreams while Aswin wants to pursue photography.
Young people are all over Bali. They’re everywhere. Taufik Hidayat, sporting a ‘Smoke Herb’ T-shirt, that he does not know the meaning of, was selling CDs at the local market. His dream? “My dream is to go back to my parent’s village. I had to leave it to find some work. I enjoy being a salesperson, but it will be even nicer to visit my parents.”
It was Say Say’s bright white scarf that drew my attention. She’s a Muslim, she informed, so she wears it. Like a few other young women I spoke to, she would like to be a teacher as well. “Because I want to help children understand the world.”
The thing that Luh Fitria Hassan dreams of is to be an excellent Balinese dancer... And like all other musicians around the world The T-Rex Band - who were playing regularly at Bali’s Hard Rock Cafe - dream of a recording deal and moving to the capital Jakarta, where all the business happens.
